CONSULTATION TO EXTEND THE AGE RANGE OF
BRADFORD PRIMARY SCHOOL
TO TAKE 2 and 3 YEAR OLDS IN A FOUNDATION STAGE UNIT
Dear parents, carers, local residents and other interested parties.
We would like to inform you of an exciting proposal to develop our School’s provision and to seek your views upon it. At Bradford Primary School we strive to deliver high quality education for children from 4 years old until they leave for secondary school at age 11. The local governing board and trustees of the school are keen to extend that age range to incorporate 2 and 3 year olds and to offer them the same provision the rest of our children receive. We are proposing to open a Foundation Stage Unit which would be established as part of our existing Class 1. A Foundation Stage Unit is a fully integrated unit which means that the children can move between our well-resourced rooms and outdoor play area making choices and learning to regulate their responses and behaviour. We will provide a safe, secure and supervised unit supported by our existing teaching staff.
At present Local Authorities such as Devon offer 15 hours per week of free early years education to all 3 and 4 year olds. This can be accessed in a variety of settings, such as day nurseries, childminders and maintained nursery classes, and in a variety of ways such as 5x3 hour sessions or a combination of sessions across the week.
Through an extended age range we propose to offer provision for the following; a maximum number of eight 3 and 4 year old children and a maximum number of three 2 year old children can be catered for in the morning and afternoon sessions or a combination of both 2,3 and 4 year old children based on the local authority guidance on ratios. There will also be the opportunity for a number of children to remain in the unit for the full day by combining their sessions together. This flexibility will allow us to cater for working parents, or those in education, as well as those that would like to access the sessional offer. We would propose to open the Foundation Stage Unit from Wednesday 4th September 2019. All children attending the unit will be offered a free school meal with the infant children.
The benefits in creating a Foundation Stage Unit would be:
Children joining the unit will be fully integrated and will be familiar with the school and
members of staff. This will result in greater continuity for these children as they move up
through the school.
-Staff working with children who will then continue into their reception year will already have
a good knowledge and understanding of the children. This will allow us to meet the needs of
the children much more quickly at this crucial early stage of development.
-Support and intervention for any child who may require additional support will be easier to
identify and implement as the children will have access to the federation SENDCo
(Special Education Needs and Disability Co-ordintor)
The foundation stage unit would be an integral part of the wider school, part of the school
‘family’ and community as well as part of the larger organisation of the Dartmoor Multi
The benefits to the local area would be:
Our current site offers us more than enough space to accommodate extra children. There would be minimal disruption to the children we already cater for as we have much smaller than average class sizes. There would be no disruption to the local community as we do not need to carry out any building work or alterations.
The consultation period for this proposal will take place between:
Monday 3rd June 2019 and Monday July 15th 2019
We very much welcome any and all views on this proposal and would invite you to respond within three weeks of this notice. You can drop your responses back via email to email@example.com, or if you wish to post your responses please return them to:
